Hair Lecture: Sunday July 10, 6pm ($3 | Free for our members)
The history of hair is nefarious and glorified. From the beginning of time, hair has been a source of communication,
protection, and magical power. The history differs between men and women, but one truth holds strong: hair equates to
power. Samson’s shimmery locks were the source of his brute strength, while Medusa’s crown of snakes turned men to
stone. The Romans shaved the heads of their defeated enemies and Jewish priests shaved the heads of adulterous women.
Hair is both liberating in short lengths and rebellious in long depending on the time period. From hippies to hipsters, hair is
the social code on which we symbolically define ourselves on a daily basis. This lecture is an investigation of hair trends,
rituals, and mythologies.

Hair Sculpture: Sunday July 10, 4pm - 6pm (Free)
Hair is a peculiar gateway to trust. The barbershop hears the most intimate of secrets despite the anonymous relationship
between the stylist and client. There is something about having our hair touched that unlocks the boundaries between
stranger and friend. Instantly, your stylist is the most trustworthy and wise person known to man…Why? Because she or he
is touching your scalp? I started cutting hair when I was 15 and still have no practical training, but I like to give a haircut for
friends whenever they request. Something uncanny always happens when a person hands me the scissors and puts their
head in my hands, an instant trust is born. I think this is in part because hair has a powerful impact on how we define
ourselves, and more deeply, an internal power rooted in history. By granting strangers access to our heads, we have to
trust in the fact that they will protect our natural resource.
In Hair Sculpture, I am interested in building instant trust with the viewer. The person receiving the sculpture atop his or her
head receives a similar service to a regular cut, however the function is negated. The experience of the styling is the
important act. The viewer crosses the boundary between onlooker to participant, and then travels into the realm of the fine
art object. The sculpture is temporary, the interaction is temporary, and the trust is eternal. I am not looking to hear secrets
or gossip, but I am looking to have a personal experience with a stranger and perhaps provide an experiential service
unlike any other.

For the first and only time in 2011, the month of July will bear witness to a complete lunation – a full lunar cycle
between two new moons. During this transformation, the moon’s gravitational forces will cause the Earth’s larger
bodies of water to rise and fall and will, perhaps, compel similar tides within our bodies. For Lunation, Glitterheart
explores this latter belief and journeys through a cosmic landscape of astrological influences where geology merges
with physiology, and performance and installation weave into ethereal layers of soil, skin, and rock.
Glitterheart is a collaboration between individuals with a focus on interactive, responsive, and visually oriented
live art.

Jess Hirsch lives and works in Minneapolis, Minnesota where she is currently pursuing an MFA in sculpture at the
University of Minnesota. Hirsch’s work has been shown at Portland’s Fontanelle Gallery and the Artistery, the
University of Michigan, and Minneapolis’ Pop Saw the Need. She previously exhibited at Nationale in May 2010.
This upcoming August, Hirsch will be an artist-in-residence at the Elsewhere Collaborative in Greensboro, North
Carolina.

Emma Lipp lives in Brooklyn, New York. She has directed, designed, performed, and produced most recently at
Portland’s Lewis and Clark College, Nationale, False Front Gallery, Emerson Space Case, Performance Works NW,
and Estonia’s MoKS Center for Art and Social Practice. She currently works at Prune Restaurant in the East Village
and is writing for The Diner Journal about her performance as an Estonian housewife.

Matt Marble is working towards his PhD in Music Composition at Princeton University. He lives in Brooklyn, New
York.
